How to Create a People Map

The Power of a People Map for Gratitude

A People Map is a tool to feel and express gratitude. It allows you to visually depict how you know who you know and see the connections that have been formed through others. By creating and reviewing a People Map, you bring heightened awareness to the key people in your life and reflect with gratitude on those who have facilitated those relationships.

Appreciating the Impact of Connections

The visual layout of a People Map supports you in fully appreciating the impact of one person who has introduced you to others and how those connections have grown exponentially. It serves as a reminder of the power of relationships and the importance of acknowledging those who have played a role in connecting you with others.

Templates for Creating People Maps

To help you get started, here are two templates of simple People Maps. The first template documents the flow from one person who connected you to another, creating a chain of relationships. The second template, more extensive, chronicles how one person connected you to multiple individuals who then made additional connections. These maps have the potential to evolve and grow as new connections continue to be formed.

Tracing Connections and Expressing Gratitude

When creating a People Map, the focus is on the connector—the person who initiated the relationship. By placing that person on the left side of your map and adding branches to the right, you can trace the evolving introductions and relationships they facilitated. Each branch represents a new connection, and you can further expand the map to include connections that arise from each of these branches.

The Potential of a Choice to Create Momentum

A People Map reveals how a choice to embark on a relationship with one person has the potential to create great momentum, both in your life and in the lives of others. Each interaction causes a chain reaction of happenings, where someone you barely knew can become a conduit to a lineage of new connections. By visualizing these connections on a People Map, you reconnect with gratitude for the individuals who have played a role in expanding your network.

Try Creating a People Map

Take a few moments to create your own People Map and reflect on the individuals who have entered your life because of one person. Consider how you were lucky enough to meet them and who led you to them. Experience the power of visualizing these connections and expressing gratitude for the relationships that have shaped your life.
